Three different encounters would eventually bring May and Jeff together in holy matrimony. While they were in college, May was intrigued by Jeff’s charm and shy demeanour and confided in a mutual friend, Fabrice, that she was interested. Fabrice made the initial introductions but nothing happened. Afterwards, Fabrice slyly told Jeff and May separately that each was interested in the other, even though it was a total fib, which eventually led May to give Jeff her number. They chatted a few times, but again, nothing came of it. It was only after Jeff made repeated visits to the store where May worked and they went out for their first date after her shift, that the rest, as the agreed, is “their story.”
String the ring
On New Year’s Eve 2009, Jeff, May and her girlfriends, all made their resolutions. Jeff decided that 2010 would be the year he was going to pop the “big question.”
Jet-lagged after a business trip, Jeff gently woke up May in the middle of the night. Inspired by the movie Stepmom – a movie May liked – Jeff gave her the end of a piece of thread to hold, and got up to walk to the light switch at the other end of the bed. Once he turned on the lights, he let the beautiful and simple solitaire ring slid-down the thread and into May’s hands.
“I immediately said ‘yes!’” she laughs.
Toes deep in soft white sand, backgrounded by the glittering turquoise waters of the Caribbean, May and Jeff exchanged vows in the presence of 82 of their loved ones at the Now Sapphire Beach in Riviera Maya. Featuring an elegant, off-white colour scheme accented by purple and lots of natural greenery, the bride walked down the aisle to an Amy Winehouse tune performed by a close friend.
“We were surrounded by the one’s we love most,” May reminisces. “I loved the personal touches of our wedding: Jeff’s friend Ralph performed the ceremony; my grandfather, Gego, gave a heartfelt speech; and my friend Karima sang a special song during the ceremony.”
Jeff recounts how special it was to share the experience with his two children, Viviana and Rafael. “It was a unique moment for me to share this day with my children. Rafael and I even dressed the same.”
With a reception at the Now Sapphire terrace, guests danced late into the night to a pre-made music list, curated by the couple. May and Jeff danced their way into marital bliss to Daan Junior’s Avè’w.
May and Jeff concluded by sharing their memories of what they loved most about their destination wedding getaway in the sun, “The entire experience was fun and easy. I especially enjoyed the days preceding and after the wedding; catching up with friends and family, doing activities together, having long leisurely meals and drinks.” When asked what they’re most unexpected memory was, May quipped, “I never thought I’d love the Trash the Dress photo shoot we did. It ended up being so much fun!”
The couple sought out more romance with a honeymoon in Antigua.
